How the Earth got its name
Answer:
It comes from its residents referring to the soil or ground. The word varies among languages, but most refer to the land. Over time, our home celestial body – otherwise nameless – took on that mundane identity almost everywhere, growing more official and poetic (“Mother Earth,” “God’s green earth,” etc.) over the last few hundred years in our part of the world.
The term “dirt,” at least in our own language, went in a different direction!
