WHY? In the interest of keeping our conversation interesting , fresh, and original.
Especially if you are Homeschooling young ones you can get them used to avoiding overused and overworked words early. You can begin to teach them the wide expanse of the English Language. They can begin learning how many wonderful, yea magnificent words are available to your students to express themselves eloquently and precisely. The English Language is rich with words available to very beautifully and clearly paint our every thought in print and words.
Ask yourself this question:
How often do you use the word “JUST’ in a day? Or in an HOUR? Or in each sentence?
Take A TEST: Keep track for “JUST” ONE HOUR how often you speak the word “JUST.” You may be very surprised how often you use the word.
NEXT: Ask yourself what does the word JUST mean?
Does it mean: Only? A little? Recently? Right? Honorable? Wait? Let me? Almost? It seems the number of speaking situations we use the word JUST is almost endless….”JUST incalculable.!” You can quickly see how rubbery we have made words like JUST. We rely on such words to mean almost anything, thus depriving of our listeners and readers of precisely what we want to convey to them.
If we have gotten your attention, then ask yourself what might be substitute words to use when you are JUST about to use the word JUST. Each time you are about to speak or write the word JUST, JUST try to catch yourself and then search for an alternative word.
Have fun! We are not going to grade you!
Oh, golly-gee, we almost forgot: JUST possibly the most overused word of all (Especially in the teen and young adult ages) : LIKE. Like how could I like forget that?
