Old Foes & New Conflicts in American Schools (What I learned from Sam, #4)

or…

New Battles in an Old Conflict

Educational battlegrounds, in our present-day public schools, stem from similar conflicts from our Colonial days. Originally, Massachusetts Puritans enforced Biblical teaching in support of a Calvinistic worldview.  Eventually, these beliefs were challenged by Unitarian deism. Calvinists recognized the doctrine of the Trinity, but Unitarians rejected Biblical teaching in the interest of “reason”.

Thomas Paine, the author of “Common Sense” (the pamphlet known for swaying Colonial opinion in the interest of independence from Great Britain) also wrote a book titled, “The Age of Reason” which defends deism over Christianity, and appears to be equally influential.

The knowledge of this continuing battle is crucial to our decisions regarding the education of our children. We must be vigilant in our examination of ALL the teachings presented in our schools and evaluate their outcomes.

Choosing how to educate our children should be done knowledgably, not blindly.

Samuel Blumenfeld has provided pages upon pages of information about the history of American schools. He teaches much about the philosophies found there. I recommend his work to those interested in this history.

Legislating Religion in New England (What I learned from Sam, #3)

In the year 1620 a group of Puritans set sail from Plymouth, England, on a venture for freedom in the New World.

They were armed with utopian ideas, hoping to escape from post-Reformation tyrants. They wanted to be self-governed, and for their churches to be protected by that government.

By 1630, survivors had established the Massachusetts Bay Colony, where educational standards were set high and rigidly enforced. They adopted the Genevan system which was developed by John Calvin and based on his, “Institutes of the Christian Religion”. They hoped to prepare their families for survival in all situations.

Their first education law was passed in 1642. Heads of households were held responsible for teaching their dependents, apprentices and servants, who were all required to learn English.

The School Code of 1647 became known as “the Old Deluder Satan Law”, because wording in the code blamed Satan for the blurring of religious doctrine through the lens of unknown languages.

Harvard was founded in this era, demanding the same academic rigor.

Dissidents were banished from the Colony (including Roger Williams, who ultimately established the colony of Rhode Island).

Sound harsh? There were those who thought so.

The Puritan’s Charter was revoked by Charles II in 1684, and in 1691 a new Charter replaced it. The second Charter diminished the influence of the Calvinists, and their efforts to return to their previous status were unsuccessful.

“In all, the Bible Commonwealth lasted no more than sixty years.” (Sam Blumenfeld)

Was this harsh, mandatory, religious education of any value?

I say, “Yes.”

The Massachusetts educational goals became a standard for schools in other colonies, and many established their own colleges.

The written word became seen as the ticket to freedom. And the American Revolution benefited from it.

Evidence of literacy can be found in documents from the time, especially in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Political knowledge and thought was at an all-time high.

I don’t attribute these outcomes to compulsory education laws, but I see them as the product of the love for learning, which was seen as a key to freedom from tyranny.

So here’s my question. Is this thirst for knowledge still alive in America?

If so, how can we nurture it?

I learned this from Sam Blumenfeld, the author of Alpha-Phonics and How to Tutor.

Before Sam created his tutorial books, which have helped thousands of homeschool families to teach their children the three R’s, he spent many years researching and writing about the history of public education.

Follow me, as I continue to learn from this great educator.

Who Taught George Washington? (What I learned from Sam, #2)

Who taught George Washington?

How about Benjamin Franklin?

Thomas Jefferson?

Do you care to guess?

Lawrence A. Cremin (author of “American Education: The Colonial Experience 1607-1783”) describes the signers of the Declaration of Independence and of the U.S. Constitution as a hodge-podge, “It is clear that the group is a collective outcome of provincial education in all its richness and diversity.”

According to Cremin, of the 56 signers of the Declaration, 22 came from provincial colleges, 2 from an academy in Pennsylvania, and the rest represented “every conceivable combination of parental, church, apprenticeship, school, tutorial and self-education, including some who studied abroad.”

Who Taught the Signers of the Declaration of Independence

14 were from provincial colleges, one from the Newark Academy, and the others “spanned the same wide range of alternatives.”

The founders of our country were the product of what Sam Blumenfeld describes as, “the freest conditions possible.” George Washington was taught by his father and a half-brother. Benjamin Franklin learned to read from his father, and he attended a private school for writing and arithmetic. Thomas Jefferson studied Latin and Greek under a tutor.

“Of the 117 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution, one out of three had had only a few months of formal schooling, and only one in four had gone to college.” (Samuel Blumenfeld)

So now you know who taught George Washington.

I learned this from Sam Blumenfeld, the author of Alpha-Phonics and How to Tutor.

Before Sam created his tutorial books, which have helped thousands of homeschool families to teach their children the three R’s, he spent many years researching and writing about public education.

Fines Levied on Truant’s Parents (What I learned from Sam, #1)

Fines levied on parents of truants?

“What fines?” you may ask.

“For skipping school?”

“That’s tyranny!”

“We’ve got to do something about this!”

But where?

When?

Believe it or not, the first example of compulsory school attendance was in Württemberg, Germany in 1559.

It was Martin Luther who encouraged the development of government schools for the purpose of moral instruction. These schools required religious instruction from the Bible, and if students did not attend school, their parents were fined.

John Calvin and the Genevan School System

John Calvin developed the Genevan school system, as a way to train teachers and students in the “New Religious Order” of the Reformation.

Further still, Calvin’s model was used for the development of Puritan educational standards in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

Even the laws and courts were expected to foster and maintain the external worship of God; to defend sound doctrine; and to adapt Christian conduct to human society.

And teachers used the Bible to teach how.

I learned this from Sam Blumenfeld, the author of Alpha-Phonics and How to Tutor.

Before Sam created his tutorial books, which have helped thousands of homeschool families to teach their children the three R’s, he spent many years researching and writing about public education.

As a proponent of home-schooling, I guess I need to vamp up my own education. So I’ve begun to read some of his works.

I’ll let you know what else I learn. (Just the facts, of course.)

Unstructured Learning & Creative Problem Solving

I recently observed an Unstructured Learning experience. Two 6-year-olds were playing in a park, and this is what they figured out:

“When you get dirty in the sand box, you can get clean in the water park.”

“If you don’t have water in your water bottle.”

“When you get wet, you can…

1) Run around and around and around or

2) Ride on the zip line or

3) Swing on the big swing”

“When you get dry, don’t go in the sandbox again.”

“I can’t believe we have school off all summer. We should come to the park more often. Don’t you think it’s nice here?”

Learning to solve problems is important. Children are often given the solution to the problem before they get a chance to think it through.

When your child is faced with a problem, give him a chance to think. Ask questions like, “Oh, no. Now what are we going to do?” or “What happened? How can we fix it?”

You can be sure that when the child makes a mistake, he is not unaware of the problem. You don’t need to tell him. Ask him. Let him help.

If you haven’t watched this enthusiastic discovery of the world, then you are certainly missing out.

Sit back and enjoy.

You’ll have your own funny stories to remember.

Read to your Children & Around the World with Madeline

Following Madeline around the World

“In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines
Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.
In two straight lines they broke their bread
And brushed their teeth and went to bed.
They left the house at half past nine –
In two straight lines in rain or shine-
The smallest one was Madeline.”

― Ludwig Bemelmans

Amid the quaint illustrations of 12 little girls in two straight lines, and towering landmarks from around the world, are stories of adventure and excitement. Rhyming words draw the attention of the listening child. A series of books follow Madeline’s travels. Paris, London, Rome, and even America provide the landscapes for her fun and sometimes dangerous escapades.

Reading aloud to children is essential. Anyone can list the advantages. Many have adopted the tradition of bedtime stories, story hour at their local libraries, or audiobooks and read-alouds on YouTube. These precious hours, however, are limited.

So why not choose the best of children’s books. Add other educational goals to your list. Geography and history lessons can be seamlessly breached by simply guiding the child through the loveliest of tales.

Travel the world with Ludwig Bemelmans’ Madeline collection.

“All aboard!”

Words and Their True Meanings (Adult lessons in Children’s Books)

“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”

“The question is,” said Alice, “whether you can make words mean so many different things.”

“The question is,” said Humpty Dumpty, “which is to be master, that’s all.”

― Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass (1871)

In this short conversation Humpty Dumpty seems to propose that words can have whatever meaning the speaker chooses to assign them. The lesson taught here requires considerable thought.

I found the same lesson in a simpler form — one a young child can understand.

The Castle Number Nine (Ludwig Bemelmens, 1937) tells the story of a man (Baptiste) who is taken into the service of Count Hungerburger-Hungerburger and moves into his castle. The count worries about, “how wrongly all things are named in this world”, and therefore assigns new names. He insists that Baptiste use the new words.

The dog becomes, “Friend-at-both-ends”; Baptiste becomes “Bring-me”; the bed is Dreambox”, and the stairs are the “Leglifter”. The cat is “Clawhigh” the fire “Happy”, and the candle “Sundrops”.

When the castle catches on fire, Bring-me rushes to the fire chief with this message, “Friend-on-both-ends chased Clawhigh down the leglifter. They knocked over the sundrops which fell in the dreambox and now the whole castle is happy.”

The ending of the tale is predictable.

Even a child can understand that words must have concrete meanings. This doesn’t require great philosophical investigations.

If you aren’t able to find a copy of this book, I found a read aloud on the YouTube channel, “The Reason We Learn”.

I hope you enjoy the story, and its message.

Take away: Say what you mean and mean what you say.

Raving Customers (Homeschooling with Peter Watt: Episode 3)

“Dianna and I are just beginning lesson 7. After going over lessons three and four Dianna was so excited that she could read that she hugged my neck and told me she loved me. She said, ‘Oh mommy, my wish is coming true. You and Daddy are teaching me to read.’ What else can I say?”

One of my greatest life experiences was the time I spent working in the “International offices” of The Paradigm Company. We were in Peter Watt’s home. My young children were hired to prepare packages for shipping. My husband introduced computers to the enterprise.

The author of Peter’s books (Samuel Blumenfeld) would be interviewed on radio programs across the nation, discussing issues such as reading instruction, tutoring, the state of the American education system, and homeschooling. When these programs were aired, Peter sat next to his phone with a 2” by 4” pad. On each page he wrote the information about an order.

When the orders were filled, he put the pages into a shoe box. These names were later added to a growing mailing list. I had the privilege of entering these names into a primitive computer data base.

I marveled at the enthusiasm Peter and June showed when they received testimonials from parents. Many of these can be read on the Alpha-Phonics webpage.

Peter’s life-long journey will never be adequately described as one of a bookseller.

More appropriately, his is the story of simply waiting and watching as one family after another rejoiced in successes. It was evident that in Peter’s mind his greatest gain was not the number of books sold. It was the number of happy families he encountered throughout his years. He was in the business of teaching young minds to read.

“Eric is now reading Robinson Crusoe and is just loving it! He had been having headaches all through second grade and was losing weight. Since he started learning by your method he hasn’t been sick one day, and has gained weight rapidly to where he has a perfect physique.”

Yes, Peter Watt is a man on a mission. And it is an honor to join that journey once again.

Mirror-Image Reading and Writing (Homeschooling with Peter Watt: Episode 2)

My first child learned to read effortlessly. It was so easy for her that she believed she had taught herself. So, of course, I assumed I was an expert at teaching reading. Then came my second child.

This daughter had the peculiar habit of reading backwards. Instead of reading “Jane sees Spot” (from secondhand Dick, Jane, and Sally readers), she read “Spot sees Jane.” Her writing was even more intriguing. She wrote her name in an exact mirror image. I was confounded.

It just so happened, that my husband had recently taken a job working for the publisher of homeschool materials (Peter Watt). One of his books taught reading based on “systematic phonics”. The timing of this employment was perfect for the problem I was facing.

He returned from one of his first days at work and presented me with a copy of Alpha-Phonics. It had no pictures, just words written in progressively difficult order.

He told me, “Peter says he thinks this book will help you.” He then gave me some very simple instructions. Basically, “Point to the letter and say the sound. Have the child repeat it. (Don’t bother with mentioning letter names, just the sound.) Move to the next letter and repeat. Then blend the sounds into words.

It sounded too simple to be true, but with my recent acceptance of failure as a reading teacher, I decided to give it a try.

Pointing at the sounds and moving from left to right across the page proved to be extremely beneficial. My daughter’s eyes were trained to track across the page from left to right. For a while, I would write an arrow at the top left corner of the page to indicate where to start and which direction to move the eyes. Soon this was no longer necessary.

The author of Alpha-Phonics, Samuel Blumenfeld, has also written an all-encompassing book called, “How to Tutor.” I recently began reading this book, which I hadn’t visited for years. He wrote, “In fact, there is a tendency to mirror-write at early stages of learning because of the natural movement of the left hand.” This explained in a short sentence, why my daughter had this problem. She is left-handed.

I modeled writing with my hand in front of the center of my body, then moving outward to the right. She mimicked the motion. But since she was left-handed, she started with her left hand in front of her center and moved outward – to the left.

This was the beginning of a very fulfilling relationship with Peter Watt and Paradigm Books.

Please follow this series of blogs based upon the work of Peter Watt and his primary author Samuel Blumenfeld. Many of his family members have worked for him over the years, and some still do.
